Final Table Cast Trained So Hard the Hand Doubles Were Not Needed

At the Final Table press conference, director Kim Do-hoon said Ahn Hyo-seop and Chang Ryul cooked so well that their prepared doubles were barely used.

01Doubles on Set, Barely Used

JTBC held the production press conference for its weekend drama Final Table on October 22 at a hotel in Guro, Seoul, two days before the premiere. Director Kim Do-hoon told reporters that each lead actor had a cooking double ready for close-up scenes. According to Sports Khan and The Fact, he said the actors ended up cooking better than the doubles, so much of the footage shot with the doubles was not used, and that they did even better than real chefs.

02Weeks of Knife and Wok Practice

Ahn Hyo-seop, who plays the gifted chef Kang Han, said a professional chef cannot look clumsy, so his knife work, wok work and plating had to be flawless. Sports Khan and Ilgan Sports both report that he practiced hard in a short time, and Sports Khan and The Fact add that he watched cooking shows such as Culinary Class Wars and MasterChef to study how chefs move.

Chang Ryul, who plays the rival chef Cha Woo-jin, said he took cooking lessons for one to two months before filming, two hours every morning, starting with basic knife skills.

03A Bowl of Banquet Noodles

Ahn, whom Sports Khan notes many viewers abroad know from Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters, compared the drama to janchi guksu, a simple bowl of banquet noodles. He said he hopes viewers will want to share a meal with someone after watching. Final Table airs Saturdays and Sundays on JTBC.
